You have the last chance to get Turris Omnia, the open source router, with a 33% discount

The most orders have come from the United States of America, the Czech Republic, Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

Prague, 5 January 2016 – The campaign on Indiegogo.com for crowdfunding of Turris Omnia, the open source router, is entering its last week. People interested in ordering the device, which is unparalleled by anything on the market in terms of its accessories and performance, with a 33% discount on the final price will only be able to do so until 11 January. The first customers will receive their new Turris Omnia in April this year and there is a chance that it will also include a new metal case. Customers from over 70 countries have ordered Turris Omnia so far. The most orders have come from the United States of America, the Czech Republic, Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

“On New Year’s Day, we reached the next stretch goal of extended 3-year warranty for the ordered Turris Omnia routers. Now, we would like to reach the goal of $500,000 – a metal case for all ordered devices,” said Bedřich Košata, head of the CZ.NIC Laboratories, which has been developing the Turris project since 2013. “During the campaign, we were surprised to find great interest in replacing the plastic cover with a metal case, which we used for Turris Omnia prototypes. We wanted to respond to this request, but manufacturing two different kinds of cases would not be economical. This is why, if there is a sufficient number of backers, we would rather abandon plastic altogether. At the same time, the stretch goal of half a million US dollars is obviously an important psychological milestone, which we would be happy to exceed before the end of our Indiegogo.com campaign.”

More than a router

In addition to a high level of security, Turris Omnia also offers much broader opportunities in terms of use, due to its high performance and accessories. The network-attached storage feature enables swift media sharing and making backups of precious data. The SIM card slot enables connection of an LTE modem, providing backup Internet connection using mobile networks. Turris Omnia, which will be manufactured in the EU, is so versatile that, in combination with an USB DVB-Tuner, it can serve, for example, for distribution of TV broadcasting to mobile telephones and computers.

Ready for the future

Similar to mobile phones and computers, network technologies are also constantly evolving. However, not many of us are prepared to buy a new router and re-configure the entire network when the time comes to upgrade to a more powerful device. Turris Omnia is a high-performance device – thanks to the user-accessible set of mini-PCIe slots for installation of extension cards, it will not be necessary to replace the router every time new WiFi standards are introduced. The user will then simply buy a new WiFi card, connect it to the device, and continue using the latest technologies available on the market.
