Notifications about the impending domain expiration are now available via SMS
Every year, the number of registered domains increases and the CZ.NIC customer service staff daily deals with up to 800 domains that are approaching their expiration date. This communication takes place over a 60-day period, in several stages – in writing, by e-mail and by phone.
Since July 17, CZ.NIC has introduced a new method of informing domain owners about the impending expiration of their domains. Customer service staff now send informative text messages on mobile phones that partially replace the phone calls used before. If the message is not delivered, the holder does not fill in his or her mobile number, or if he/she has disabled receiving informative text messages, customer service staff will continue to contact him or her by phone.

“The efficiency of our phone communications has been declining; currently we are able to contact successfully only about a half of all users we try to call on any given day. At the same time, the number of mobile phone numbers listed in our registry is increasing. That’s why we decided to switch to another solution, namely to sending SMS. The trial operation was successful and welcomed by domain owners. We are expecting a more successful communication and simplification of the whole service,” said Martin Peterka, chief operating officer at CZ.NIC.
A domain holder may prevent the expiration of his or her domain by keeping the contact information in the registry up to date. The holder is notified of the impending expiration date not only by CZ.NIC, but also by his or her registrar. In addition, the date can be verified directly in the registry.
