Turris MOX raised over CZK 7,900,000 (USD 361,000) in the Indiegogo campaign
This secure modular router managed to exceed the set goal by almost 44%. Its fans will still be able to pre-order it in the InDemand mode at Indiegogo.
This secure modular router managed to exceed the set goal by almost 44%. Its fans will still be able to pre-order it in the InDemand mode at Indiegogo. Prague, 1 June 2018 – Today at 9 a.m., the administrator of the Czech national domain CZ.NIC concluded its campaign for the project of the Turris MOX modular router, having raised over CZK 7,900,000 (USD 361,000). This result ranks the secure open source router among the most successful Czech projects on any crowdfunding platform, not only on Indiegogo. It will still be possible to pre-order Turris MOX in the InDemand mode at prices higher by approximately 15 %. Fans from about 40 countries have contributed to the Turris MOX project. The secure open source router was also significantly supported by corporate customers.
Ondřej Filip, CEO of CZ.NIC, said: “We are very happy that Turris MOX was so well received by both fans and corporate customers. Allowing its users to build a device exactly as they need it, it truly is a unique concept. It will be appreciated not only by network technology enthusiasts, but also by companies looking for suitable hardware for their own projects.”
Modularity for the Future
Apart from the ability to build the router according to the users’ needs, Turris MOX also allows for a flexible solution when their needs change. Thanks to the modular construction, they can add ethernet ports any time with the MOX E module, or, when a fibre connectivity is introduced, they can buy the Turris MOX D SFP module. The extension module Turris MOX B will make the anticipated transition to the new 802.11ax Wi-Fi standard much easier – a simple switch of the mPCIe card will do it. This modular network solution provides the users with certainty that their security will not be in conflict with the growth of their computer network in the future, and new technologies will be easy to implement thanks to new modules. Moreover, the CZ.NIC association have recently introduced a new module, Turris MOX F, with four fast USB 3.0 ports, which can be used to create a RAID storage. The collaboration of CZ.NIC with Nextcloud will later allow for Turris MOX to be transformed into your own secure cloud storage accessible from anywhere.
Flexibility with PoE
The possibility of providing power supply via the Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology allows to install Turris MOX in places with a limited access to electricity. You can therefore place it almost anywhere, whether you use it as a Wi-Fi AP access point or as a network switch. The PoE extension provides for many practical uses, such as the possibility of connecting a storage as a server for security cameras, hidden away and out of reach of the unwelcome visitors.
A secure gate to the Internet
Software updates in traditional routers have to be installed by the users themselves, who are usually unaware that updates are available and, consequently, do not update their devices. This is all the more dangerous since today’s network devices and IoT solutions are faced with a new threat – attackers who use people to mine cryptocurrencies without their knowledge. Turris MOX will install security updates automatically. This dramatically improves security for the users, which is very desirable in the context of the gradual growth of the Internet of Things.
