The CZ.NIC Association provides its DNS services to the Canadian national domain administrator
For several years now, in a similar way the CZ.NIC Association has been hosting domains for smaller registries: Macedonia, Tanzania and Angola. These countries use the FRED registration system to manage their national domains, the system that was introduced by the Czech CZ.NIC Association.
CZ.NIC, the administrator of the Czech national domain, has signed a cooperation agreement with the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) that manages the .CA top-level domain. CZ.NIC will thus join a narrow group of trusted providers with whom CIRA cooperates on the administration of the .CA domain registry. CIRA has about 2.7 million domains under management, which is about twice as many as the Czech national domain.
“Having a variety of independent DNS providers is critical to ensuring the security and resilience of the .CA domain registry. We are pleased add CZ.NIC to our global network of DNS partners and look forward to working with them in the future,” said Jacques Latour, chief technology officer, CIRA.

“Last year we were approached by CIRA representatives asking whether we could provide our DNS services to their registry as well. We were very pleased by this offer and today I am happy to say that we made this joint project happen. Users of Canadian national domains will thus get a much better response and availability of their service to the customers from the European region,” said Ondřej Filip, CEO of CZ.NIC. “From our point of view, this is the first collaboration of such kind. We hope it won’t be the last one, and there will be more similar joint projects in the future."
From a technical point of view, this project consists in sharing the capacity of DNS servers primarily intended for .CZ domains with other entities. The available capacity greatly exceeds the real demand, so it is useful and beneficial to use it for other projects as well. In December last year and this month there was a significant increase in the capacity of the Prague location, where 30 additional servers were connected to the neutral interconnection node NIX.CZ with a 100Gbps link.
