The Czech national domain administrator has published an overview of statistics for 2020
The CZ.NIC Association published the 2020 Domain Report, which showed, among other things, that the COVID-19 pandemic also had an impact on the development of the Czech national domain. Contrary to the expectations for stagnation, the number of .CZ domain names increased year-on-year by more than three percent and the number of e-shops has also increased due to the pandemic-related measures. The set of statistics provides a full overview of the state of the Czech national domain.
The set of statistics provides a full overview of the state of the Czech national domain – DNS traffic, DNSSEC technology, software used for major Internet services or interesting facts about domain names and geography. At the end of the year, the Register of the Czech national domain administrator contained a total of 1,371,566 .CZ domains, which is 3.2% more than in 2019. The cause of the largest increase in the last three years is very likely related to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the measures taken.
Of the 204,265 registrations, most took place from March to June and from October to December, corresponding to two waves of the pandemic. At least 2,500 of the newly registered domains probably had a direct connection with the disease because their names contain at least one of the twelve selected keywords, such as corona/korona, covid, virus or respirator.
Compared to last year, the number of e-shops has increased almost by half due to restrictions. There was also a massive increase in parked domains (35.87%) and domains secured by DNSSEC, which now constitute more than 60% of the total number. The number of IPv6-enabled domains is growing at a smaller rate, with only 32.5% of domains available through this Internet protocol. As for DNS traffic, the median response time (RTT) of resolvers has reduced in almost all geographic regions and availability of .CZ servers has improved significantly in east and southeast Asia in the past year, mainly thanks to the launch of two new servers in Singapore.
The largest group of domain holders (almost 93%) are Czech residents, with the most domains held in Prague (409,145), and least, as before, in the Karlovy Vary Region (15,404). From the point of view of distribution of registered domains in individual regions, the year-on-year statistics has not changed. The largest group of foreign holders consists of holders from Slovakia, Germany and the United States of America. An interesting case is the Bahamas, where the number of .CZ domains held have increased from 70 to 2,999 since last year.
