Researchers from the CZ.NIC Labs tested new method for passive DNS round-trip time analysis

The report describes a new method for increasing DNS-over-TCP traffic volume that is used for estimating RTT.

CZ.NIC Laboratories published a report on passive analysis of round-trip time (RTT) for DNS queries. The report describes a new method for increasing DNS-over-TCP traffic volume that is used for estimating RTT. The method utilizes a mechanism in the DNS protocol itself that requires the resolver to switch over to TCP. The report presents experiences from the deployment on a production server for the .CZ top-level domain as well as quantitative results of the tests, including more precise RTT estimates. The complete report is available from the web of the ADAM project, which aims at a systematic processing and analysis of DNS data.

The ADAM (Advanced DNS Analytics and Monitoring) project has been started 2019 and aims to develop tools for effective and robust collection and processing of data on DNS transactions, to improve and expand the methods of their analysis, and to develop appropriate user interfaces and reporting methods. Within the project was made DNS crawler tool or some other reports.
