The DIA Will Again Entrust The CZ.NIC With The Operation Of The International Gateway eIDAS

The international gateway eIDAS enables access to online services of the public sector using the login methods notified by other EU Member States, while allowing Czech citizens to use the methods notified under the eIDAS Regulation for logging in to foreign online services.

For the third time in a row, the Czech national domain administrator has succeeded in the open tender for the operation of the international gateway eIDAS, meaning that it will operate it for another four years, until 2028. The international gateway eIDAS enables access to online services of the public sector using the login methods notified by other EU Member States, while allowing Czech citizens to use the methods notified under the eIDAS Regulation for logging in to foreign online services. These methods include electronic national ID cards, the eGovernment mobile key and the MojeID service operated directly by the CZ.NIC Association. The eIDAS gateway also includes a separate component required for logging in with German eIDs. CZ.NIC is to continue its six-year cooperation on this project, which resulted from tenders announced in 2018 and 2020.

“We are pleased to be able to participate in the development of eGovernment in the Czech Republic, in this case in the field of cross-border electronic identification, which is in line with the long-term strategy of the Association. In this way, we can take advantage of the 14 years of experience we have gained in operating the MojeID service,” said Jaromír Talíř, who is responsible for technical development in the CZ.NIC Association in the area of electronic identification, including the eIDAS regulation. “Currently, we are also working intensively on the new version of the eIDAS regulation, which will introduce the European Digital Identity Wallet.”

CZ.NIC has long been involved in building the infrastructure for cross-border electronic identification as defined by the eIDAS regulation. In cooperation with the Czech Ministry of the Interior (MVČR), CZ.NIC has been involved in the STORK 2.0 (Secure idenTity acrOss boRders linKed) project since 2012, where a pilot gateway connected to MojeID was operated, being the only existing electronic identification system in the Czech Republic at that time. On the basis of a grant from INEA (CZ.PEPS), the association first tested and then launched a product version of eIDAS node connected to the National point for identification and authentication (NIA) on the one hand and to foreign nodes on the other.
