Domain Report 2025: Growth in domain numbers accelerated, secure domains also grew significantly
By the end of last year, the number of registered domain names totaled more than 1.5 million, marking a 2.04% year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, the number of DNSSEC-secured domain names surpassed one million.
CZ.NIC, the Czech national domain administrator, has published its annual Domain Report with key data on the development of the .CZ domain. The main indicators monitored include the development of the number of domain names and the share of domain names secured by DNSSEC technology. By the end of last year, the number of registered domain names totaled more than 1.5 million, marking a 2.04% year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, the number of DNSSEC-secured domain names surpassed one million. In addition to these statistics, the summary also covers trends in domain auctions, the registrar market, DNS traffic, software used, as well as web content and domain geography. At the end of 2025, there were 1,515,860 domains ending with .CZ. On average, 16,222 domains were registered per month, with the highest number of registrations in January (18,722) and the lowest number in June (14,559). After several years of stagnation, the share of domain names secured using DNSSEC technology has increased significantly to 66.79%, corresponding to 1,012,492 domain names. After two years of operating the Domain Auctions service, 5,387 .CZ domains were auctioned through the system, out of a total of 162,830 offered. Thus, the average success rate reached 3.31%.
“Although at the end of the year the number of domains continued to indicate a gradual market saturation, it increased faster year-on-year than in previous years, mainly thanks to new registrations along with a long-term stable renewal rate. We saw a significant shift in the deployment of DNSSEC, where we were able to increase the share of secure domains by more than seven percent thanks to greater cooperation with registrars. The persistent interest in domain auctions also confirms that opening this market was the right step,” says Ondřej Filip, CEO of the CZ.NIC Association.
In terms of web content, parked domain names and domain names without content continued to decline, while the number of actively used domains, especially e-shops and personal websites, increased. The registrar market continues to be dominated by a few major companies, in particular WEDOS and INTERNET-CZ.
The majority of .CZ domain name holders (91.36%) still have addresses in the Czech Republic. The number of domain names increased year-on-year in all regions, with Prague traditionally having the highest number of domains (433,142). The share of domains with foreign holders is 8.64%, most of them coming from Slovakia, the United States and Germany, with a significant increase in holders from Ukraine.
The .CZ domain infrastructure currently consists of 63 DNS servers located in 26 sites in 15 countries. They are used by an average of 1.83 million different resolvers daily with approximately 26.5 thousand queries per second.
